Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha Hi-Lo starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
While it seems complex initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of betting choices and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, and a few shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
